You’ve probably heard the term LMS or learning management system used in the field of education technology. A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application that helps teachers and students connect. With an LMS teachers, students and community stakeholders can keep in touch with a single platform and make their workflow more efficient and productive.
What is an LMS and why is it so important in education?
The Wikipedia definition goes a little deeper, stating, “A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or training programs. They help the instructor deliver material to the students, administer tests and other assignments, track student progress, and manage record-keeping. LMSs support a range of uses, from supporting classes that meet in physical classrooms to acting as a platform for fully online courses, as well as several hybrid forms, such as blended learning and flipped classrooms.”
Schools use an LMS for lots of reasons. This might include making it easier to share course content with students or keeping parents tuned in to expectations for students. An LMS can also be used to facilitate professional development in the same space teachers use to connect with students. Teachers can use an LMS to facilitate discussions among students inside and outside of the classroom and help families become active participants in their child’s education.
As an educator, I’ve used an LMS to post content for my students at the college level and give them a space to submit their work. It’s made it easy for them to stay in touch and access course materials. Additionally, we’ve used discussion boards to talk about course objectives.
